Newburg Fire Department

From Chief Peter Waldkirch

I wish to thank each and everyone of you that helped make the Newburg Firemen’s Picnic a success, either by helping in the hamburger stand or bar area, or if you purchased raffle tickets or helped in any way. THANK YOU and know that we really appreciated your help. It is gratifying to know that when the Fire Department needs help, there are people who will step forward to give us a hand.

Again, thank you.

Newburg Lions News

By Barbara McHugh

The Newburg Lions and Lioness Car Show and Village-Wide Rummage Sale will be Sunday, August 21st. There is a sign up map at the back of this issue of Bridges or you can pick up a copy of the map at Tri Par. Please fill out and mail the whole map back to Barbara McHugh 7105 Hickory Road, West Bend, WI  53090. These need to be received by July 20th. Also, please make sure that your phone number is on this sheet. If you don’t give me a phone number I can’t call you with your rummage sale number.  Also, if you have a new street that is not on the map, please draw it in and I will include it on the final map for the day of the sale. Please mark your house on the map so I don’t have to drive around and look for it to include on the map. Last year was a smashing success and I have no reason to doubt that we will have a wonderful event again this year.

We need your help!! If there are any local folks that would like to help the Lions or Lioness the day of the car show, please contact us. If you are new in the area – it is a great way to meet your neighbors. You can flip a few burgers or direct parking … or help with the children’s games. We are a very small club and need the support of the community to make this day great.

Show events – we will once again have the help of Sandy Stockhausen and the Newburg Fire Department with screening of diabetes and blood pressure. We may have a few other screening choices, too, such as fingerprinting and hearing screening.

There will be GAMES for the kids and lots of prizes for all of them, and of course, lots of AWESOME CARS to look at and you can rummage to your hearts content. The FOOD AND REFRESHMENTS will give you the needed break from rummaging or rubber necking the vehicles. Have a safe summer and hope to see you in August.

Possibilities for Bridges

We are looking at publishing the Bridges on a monthly basis with the newsletters being available at Tri Par, State Bank of Newburg and various downtown businesses. The monthly newsletter would not be hand delivered but the quarterly newsletter still would be delivered. Also, any of the businesses, if you would like to do a small advertising in our Bridges – we welcome your camera-ready art. Ideas would possibly be a coupon or any small advertising that we could easily paste onto our newsletter. These are just a few ideas in the making.

Newburg Baseball

By Phyllis Damrow, Trustee

We just want to let you know that our season is off to a good start. No rain game – like last year. We have a very good coaching staff again this year, and would like to thank them all for the many hours they spend with their team as far as practicing and games. I have added many new items to the food menu at the stand and encourage you to come down if you don’t have anything to do on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. We will provide some good games and entertainment in the park. We also have games at Dr. Weber Park in Newburg at 6 p.m. each Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. If you have any questions or want more information, please stop by at the concession stand on our league nights or call me at 675-2493. If you need a schedule for the games, I have them available at the park.

Myraneers 4-H Club Update

By Kurt Cannon

In May, we talked about the Milk Giveaway and Breakfast on the Farm. All Fair Entry forms have to be turned into the Fair Park office by June 30th. We ended the meeting with demonstrations by Photography, Arts & Crafts, and Gardening.

In June, we held our meeting at the Falk Farm. We talked about the 4-H float, which was in the Newburg Parade. We came in first place. The theme was "4-H is Your Pot of Gold". Thanks for all the hard work put into making the float. We had the Ice Cream Giveaway at Newburg State Bank and the Milk Giveaway at Tri-Par. Thank you to all of you that helped. 4-H record books are due at the August meeting. The meeting was adjourned with Jeff Halverson, Veterinarian, talking to the club. Everyone then enjoyed root beer floats.

The Washington County Fair is on July 26-31. Hope to see everyone there!

Welcome, H.O.M.E. Bed & Breakfast

House Of wheelchair friendly Modification Examples

On Wednesday, June 8 Governor Doyle declared  Washington and Ozaukee Counties to be the capital for the day.  The Governor and his staff spent the entire day touring a variety of businesses, tourist sites and human services programs.  Welcome, H.O.M.E. Bed & Breakfast and House Of wheelchair friendly Modification Examples was honored to be visited by Marc Marotta and staff from the Department of Administration. They toured our unique wheelchair accessible design house, learned about the array services and opportunities we offer to the public and met some of the volunteers who keep this place going.

We’re pretty busy in the B&B this summer.  But, we still have some vacancies - so don’t hesitate to call if you need lodging for overnight guests. B&B guests are coming from both coasts - New York and California - as well as from Midwestern states.   Their reasons for visiting this area are widespread - business, family reunions, weddings, baptisms or simply to just get away from it all.  One adult daughter is bringing her mother for an overnight stay primarily so Mother has the opportunity to take a bath.   The Waukesha County home she lives in only has a toilet and a sink on the first floor and she’s not able to get up stairs.

Several groups are making use of our grounds, too.  Our woods is the site of a GeoCache.  A treasure hunt that people from all over the world participate in. In August the MS Support groups of West Bend will be hosting their summer picnic at Welcome, H.O.M.E.   Red Hats have had pot luck lunch and made a red bra purse - cuter than you would imagine!

We just received the donation of a beautiful Wurlitzer piano. Thanks to a grant from the West Bend Area Community Foundation we will be putting better heat in our 1,200 sq foot lower level making this space more comfortable in the winter months.  As a finishing touch we’re currently seeking donations (cash or materials and skilled labor) to put in a drop ceiling.   We make this space available to others for  family, community, club, church gatherings.

Mark your calendars:   Saturday, September 10, 2005  Welcome, H.O.M.E. Bed & Breakfast is hosting Party
on the Prairie – There’s No Place Like HOME. Free Admission.   Family Fun.  Music.  Storytelling    10:00 am  - 3:00 pm.

Snack on caramel apples, Wisconsin cheeses (compliments of the Ozaukee County Dairy Promotion Committee) popcorn, beverages. Just 25¢.  Bake Sale  -  bakery will be sold by the piece or by the pan - pies, jams, jellies, relishes, flavored vinegars and other goodies.
Gene Gryniewicz, a burly and animated professional storyteller  from Illinois will be sharing his tales while his wife, Celeste, teaches children’s crafts. Take a “look and see” scavenger hunt  in the woods. Build a scarecrow to take home.   Paint a t-shirt.  Make a leaf rubbing. Everyone is welcomed to attend this event.   This will be a good time to tour the house.  Stop up and see what it is we do up here.

We’re still collecting coffee cans and old clothes to use for the scarecrow building.  You can drop them off any time - if no one is around we’ll see them if you leave them on the front porch.
To make the day a success for everyone we can always use a few more volunteer hands AND baked goods !!!!!!  Call Diane 675-2525 or Jane at 692-2554 if you’re interested in helping out.

Original crafters are invited to participate in Homemade Holiday - - a weekend craft fair.   Nov. 11 - 12- 13, 2005     Call Kay 306-0845 or Sally  675 - 0901 for details.

Newburg Lions Club

By President Roger Krell

The Newburg Lions started out their Lions fiscal year with a Blood Drive at the Newburg Fire Station. It was our third attempt and was not well received by the community. Future blood drives are probably not a priority list unless we receive Village and Town support.

Our next project is The Car Show which is being held on August 21st along with the popular Village of  Newburg Rummage Sale. We are hoping the turnout will be even better than last year. The Firemen’s Park will open at 7 a.m. with the registration of Show Cars. Coffee and doughnuts will be sold at the concession stand so we hope many people will start their day out in the park. The Car Show has no admission charge and there will also be games for the children and all kinds of refreshments. For more information about entering a car in the show, please contact Chuck Hiller at 675-6833 or Art Seyfert at 675-2494.

The Big Raffle Drawing will take place at the Newburg Fire Station on Saturday, September 10th. The drawing will take place between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. with refreshments being sold. Everyone’s invited.

Anyone interested in joining the Lions Club, please contact me at 338-8204 or any other Lion member.

Attention – Attention – Registration of Voters

By Clerk Cording

Due to changes in the State and Federal laws concerning voter registration, those of you who have not registered during the last three elections (last November, February and April of this year), you are encouraged to register to vote on Saturday mornings from 9-11 a.m. at the Village Hall. Citizens are asked to bring their drivers’ license or ID card with them as it will make it easier to complete the form.

This effort is completely voluntary at this time; however by taking action now, it will save you from long registration lines in 2006.

The Federal Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA) and Wisconsin State Statues requires all voters in Wisconsin municipalities be registered in order to vote after January 1, 2006.

Your cooperation in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Dept. of Public Works

For future reference – brush pick up will be the LAST SATURDAY of the month starting with July, 2005. Please have your brush out to the curb in manageable 4 foot or smaller lengths by Saturday mornings at 7 a.m. Also, if you would like to bring your brush to the municipal shed – you can do that any Saturday. The recycle center is open on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon. We also take drain oil.
