Newburg Fire Department

By Chief Peter Waldkirch

Well, another Newburg Fire Department picnic has come and gone. The picnic is a tremendous amount of work, but the income from the picnic is used as a big part of our operating budget.

I want to take this opportunity to thank every one of the many people that volunteered to help us, either in the bar or the hamburger stand. Without the many volunteers that offer to help, there wouldn’t be a Newburg Firemen’s Picnic.

I also want to thank everyone that either made a cash donation or food donation. Believe me, it is well appreciated. All of you have helped make this picnic a successful year. For that, the whole department wants to say, "THANK YOU".

The only other exciting news is that by the end of July, we will have a new Pumper Tanker in our station, which will be used to better serve the residents of the Town of Trenton and part of the Town of Saukville.

Just a Reminder

There is no parking on Main Street from 2:30 a.m. until 6:00 a.m. every day. Also, there is no parking on the paved portion of Enge Drive at anytime.

 Newburg Sportsmen’s Club

A Hunter Education class will begin again at the clubhouse in August. Registration will begin July 1st at Sager’s Mens Apparel, in West Bend. Registration is limited.

Summer 3D archery shoots: The remaining public shoots will be on July 27th, and August 24th. These events are great ways to tune up your shooting skills for the fall hunt. Twenty-eight 3D animal targets are set in lifelike settings with unmarked distances. One arrow only per target is allowed. If you haven’t participated in a 3D shoot before, this is a very relaxed event. The walking trail is not only scenic but provides good exercise for all. Competition is available for cubs, youth, traditional equipment, hunter, and trophy classes. If you’d just like to see what this is all about, come for a walk without shooting. Food and beverages are available all day at the clubhouse.

Summer Trap League: The trap league is going very well with highly competitive shooting. There is a good mix from very young shooters to very "experienced" shooters. Anyone interested in shooting practice rounds is invited to participate. You do not have to be on a team for open practice. Trap shooting is on Tuesday nights after 6:00 p.m.

Summer Raffle: The club’s summer raffle is in full swing. Cash prizes ranging from $1000 to $50 are offered. Ticket prices re $5.00 each with a maximum of 1000 tickets to be sold. The prize drawing will be held at 4:00 p.m. on August 24th. Proceeds go toward our local club scholarship program as well as outdoor improvements. Tickets are available from any club member and at the clubhouse.

CAR SHOW AND COMMUNITY RUMMAGE SALE, AUGUST 17th.....

The Newburg Lions and Lioness are making lots of plans for the Sunday, August 17th Car Show. The Newburg Community Rummage Sale takes place on the same day as the car show. The sign up flyers are being stuffed into paper boxes and on front steps of homes all over the Newburg area the last week of June. The sign up deadline is July 20th. The cost is only $5.00 and that will help to defray the costs of advertising for the event. If you need a sign up sheet, stop in Tri Par in Newburg and you can pick one up there. The map has been expanded upon this year to map a route that will send people up Hwy. M to bypass the bridge if it is actually out at that time. If any of you were here last year you will remember that we were inundated with swarms of eager shoppers! Sign up now and get on the map, it is your ticket to selling lots of goodies and for $5.00 you can't get more for your advertising money.

CHILD FINGERPRINT PROGRAM AND DIABETES SCREENING

There are two other events that will be sponsored by the Lions and Lioness this year and both of them are free to the public. We are setting up a tent on the grounds of the car show where you can get your child fingerprinted. If you haven't already taken that precaution to insure your child's safety you should do it this summer. We are also sponsoring Diabetes screening with the help of our county diabetes educator Sandy Stockhausen. She has generously offered her time to the community. She will be setting up in the same area as the fingerprinting. We will post the hours for this testing as the date gets closer for the event. Please take the time to stop in and have yourself tested for diabetes, it only take a few minutes and with early detection you can start a program of diet and medication that can get the disease under control.

GAMES FOR KIDS

Don't forget that the car show is also a fun place to take the kids. We have lots of games for them and prizes that they can win. There will be popcorn and build your own Sundae – also the bouncing air ride and many other games for the children. This event is a good community event with lots of good food, cold beer, soda and some of the coolest cars you will ever see.

Newburg Lions Club Report

By Roger Krell, President

On Sunday, August 17th – The Lions Club annual Car Show will be taking place at the Newburg Firemen’s Park, along with the Rummage sale listed above. We hope this will be bigger than ever. The Fire Department’s new pumper will be on display with fire fighters explaining its functions. This is a great opportunity for the people of the village to see how this new pumper works and find out how much skill it takes to operate. Food and refreshments will be available and all kinds of fun and games for the children. Rockin Ron will again provide the musical entertainment. The awards show will take place at about 3:30 p.m. with the Giles McHugh Best of Show Award highlighting the event. There is no admission and everyone is welcome.

On Sunday, September 7th we are holding a Steak Fry and Golf Jamboree at the West Bend Lakes Golf Club. The profits from this event will go to the Newburg, West Bend and Fillmore Fire Departments to be used towards training and equipment for the new Washington County Dive Teams. The Newburg Lions and the West Bend Lakes Golf Club will hold a Golf Tournament in the morning and Open Golf in the afternoon. Whichever event you golf, the profits will go to the Washington County Dive Team. The Steak dinner will start during half-time of the PACKER GAME and continue until 7 p.m. Again, these profits also go to the Dive Teams. There will be other golf games of skill to participate in during the afternoon along with refreshments. The drawing of the Big Raffle will also take place in the afternoon, where up to $21,000 will be given away. Everyone is welcome and there will be several TV’s to watch the PACKER game or you can come and join us after the game.

These are our two major events that we hope you will support. If you would care to donate any prizes or money for these events, you can do so by contacting Roger Krell at 262-338-8204. Since the Newburg Lions were given their charter, they have donated over $97,000 to Lion endorsed charities and to the community. They can do this because they don’t own any big plush Clubhouses and other toys. We rely on the people of the community to open their hearts and pocketbooks to us. Our meeting places are also provided free of charge by West Bend Lakes and Sandy’s Parkside Inn and the Lioness meet at the Newburg Fire Department. We thank them. If you would like to join the Newburg Lions, please contact me.

Have a great summer, and we hope to see you at one of these events – or better yet, both of the events.

Welcome, H.O.M.E. Bed & Breakfast House Of Modification Examples
by Diane Miller

Summer just arrived - but we¹re already planning for fall.  Mark your calendars  for Sunday, September 14.   Welcome, H.O.M.E.  B & B is hosting Celebrate Autumn on the Prairie   - a family fun day.  Free Admission.    Breakfast will be available from 9:00 - Noon. We’ll have home baked goodies  for sale from  noon - 3:00.  The entire house will be filled with Quilts.  Quilts will be on display  and for sale.  Folks will be telling quilting stories and giving demonstrations.    Music will be provided by Brennan Totten.

Tickets for the quilt raffle are now available.   A full size quilt donated by It¹s A Stitch Quilt Guild is the grand prize. Stop up to see the quilt or buy a ticket or two...

Quilter’s exhibitor space is still available - call Jane Derks for details 692-2554. And, we can always use more volunteer hands prior to and during the event.  Call Diane 675-2525 if you’re interested or just curious.

We’re updating our web site.  Take a look at  www.hnet.net/~welcomehome

Welcome, H.O.M.E. B & B is set on slightly less than 18 acres of land which includes our prairie, meadow and woods.  The land, house, trails in the woods, picnic tables, Porta-Potty are all paid for (and maintained by)  Welcome, H.O.M.E. B & B.  (not by the Village of Newburg).  In return for your generosity as a community, Welcome, H.O.M.E. B & B  likes to share our place with you.  Feel free to enjoy it.

However, we do ask you to please help us out. ( Parents and landlords, please share this information with your  kids and tenants).

No bikes or roller blades on the trail.   (Sorry, we know this is fun).   Unfortunately,  the ruts these create are dangerous to the people who walk or who use a wheelchair on the trail.

Leave your dogs at home when you come to take a walk or to attend an event. There are many reasons for this rule.   Sad to say, some dog owners are not very thoughtful and do not clean up after their pet, even after the dog has made a mess on our walking trail.   Another reason is, some of our guests are accompanied by assistant or seeing eye dogs.  These animals are not only expensive, but more importantly, are vital to their owner¹s lives. We don’t want to take a chance that something would happen to one of them when they are out for a walk in the woods.    Finally, my dog does live here with me.  This is his yard - just like your yard is for your dog.  Thank you for respecting this request.

 *   If you have a picnic in the woods, please take all of your litter home with you.  We are doing our best to live in concert with the animals that call our land home.  The raccoons are quite bold this summer.  They don’t even run from the front porch with the dog feverishly barking at them when I flip on the light. Litter will just make this worse.

Hope this answers some questions you may have.  If you’d like a tour of Welcome, H.O.M.E. B & B, would like more information about volunteer opportunities, have guests coming to visit and not enough room to put them up at your house...  give Diane a call at 675- 2525. Have a good summer!

As many of the residents of Newburg already know, the Main Street Bridge will be replaced this year. In 2001 Washington County began the design process for the new bridge. The County determined the age and recent damage to the bridge necessitated the replacement.

The construction will cause some inconvenience, but it will be for a relatively short period of time and is necessary.

The project will be let (or bid) during July of this year. The construction will begin some time during mid August. The deadline for opening the bridge to traffic is currently set for December 1, 2003. It will be closed again some time next year for a short time to complete paving, pavement marking, and final landscaping items.

Main Street (CTH MY) will be closed during construction. Access to the residence on Hickory Road and to businesses and residences within the project limits on Main Street will be maintained throughout construction. Automobile traffic from one side of the Milwaukee River to the other will be detoured onto Highway 33, Highway M, and Highway Y. Hickory Road from Main Street to Enge Drive will also be closed to through traffic. Those of you living north of Enge should use Shady Lane as a detour. A temporary pedestrian bridge will be constructed over the Milwaukee River north of the project, to accommodate pedestrian traffic from both sides of the Village during construction.

Please do not hesitate to contact Village Hall or the Village Engineer at 262.241.4466
