Lions Car Show, Rummage & Golf Tourney
By Roger Krell
The Newburg Lions/Lioness Club is again holding their
Car Show and Village of Newburg Rummage Sale on August 17th. We hope this
will be bigger and better than ever. The Lioness will again be asking the
residents of Newburg for a donation of $5 which will be used to offset
expenses for advertising. They will then be put on the Rummage Sale map,
which will be available to the public.
The Car show will again be held in Firemen’s Park with
free admission. One of the many highlights of the show will be the
presentation of the Giles McHugh Best of Show Award. This Award was named
in honor of Giles for his many years of dedication to the Car Show and the
Newburg Lions Club. Another event will be the presentation of the new
pumper by the Newburg Fire Department. We will be inviting Fire
Departments from the surrounding area to come and view the Newburg Fire
Department’s pride and joy, while their families enjoy the rummage sale
and festivities in the park.
The Concession Stand in the park will offer the usual
delicious hamburgers, brats, hot dogs and of course – soda and beer. We
will be popping our own corn this year with a popcorn popper donated by
West Bend Lakes. The Lioness plan of having many different kinds of games
for the young and older children. Rockin’ Ron will be providing the great
entertainment again this year. Other events are still in the planning
stage, and who knows – in Newburg the Sky is the Limit. There will be a
clinic held which will fingerprint and take photos of your children. The
fingerprints and photos will be given to the parents or guardians for
safe-keeping in case anything unfortunate happens to your child. This is
sponsored by Edward Jones Investments of West Bend whose representative,
Rory Demmer, is a member of the Newburg Lioness Club. We hope to have
members of our local law enforcement help conduct this important clinic.
The Newburg Lions/Lioness are co-sponsoring this public service and it’s
all FREE.
We are also selling our BIG RAFFLE TICKETS again this
year at a cost of $50 each. We know its a lot of money, but the good that
the profits from these tickets generate is unsurpassed. In fact, all the
profits from all of the Lions/Lioness functions get passed onto the
community and other Lion endorsed funds and charities. If you don’t ever
sponsor any other fund or belong to any other organization or volunteer
for anything, now is the time to redeem yourself. Buy a ticket or two. It
will make you fee so good.
If you would like to buy a ticket or volunteer to help
at one of our Lion functions, contact any Lion member. Better yet, if you
would like to join the Lions or Lioness, you would be welcomed with open
arms. We are also registered at Pick n’ Save and our number is 546470. We
would appreciate part of your grocery tab put towards our account.
Another event we are planning is the Golf Tournament
and Steak Fry. You can participate in one or both events. We will also be
drawing the winners of the BIG TICKET RAFFLE during the course of the day.
Other forms of entertainment are being planned for this day. It all takes
place on Sunday, September 7th at West Bend Lakes Golf Club. More
information about this event at a later date.
Thank you – Roger Krell, President

Newburg Sportsmen’s
Club
By Joe Fuehrer
The Newburg Sportsmen’s Club is making plans for spring
and summer activities just as the last weeks of winter indoor archery
leagues come to a close. We have hosted over 50 youth on Saturday mornings
for archery and Monday though Friday night adult leagues. It’s been a
great way to keep in shape and not lose the shooter’s eye during the off
season months.
The annual Wisconsin Deer & Turkey Expo is coming up on
April 4, 5 & 6 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Many members will
take this in to see new products, talk to the experts, and view the "Wall
of Shame". (Mounts of illegally killed game animals)
Hunter Education classes will begin at the clubhouse on
April 21st through May 12th. Registration is now
closed for this spring’s class. Trapper Education will be held at the club
facilities on April 25, 26, and 27. You may call Slade, at 629-1531 to
sign up for this class.
4-H will be using the club’s trap facilities for trap
shoot training this spring under the direction of Bob Banazak and 4-H
trainer Alan Ratzel. They will be engaged in shooting on Wednesday nights
beginning on May 14th through July 2nd.
It’s also time to form summer trap teams. Anyone
interested in shooting trap on Tuesday nights is invited to form teams of
six shooters and join the summer league. Individuals interested in
shooting may also want to call for information. Often other teams may be
short one or two persons. Individuals may also shoot practice rounds
during the summer without being on a regular team. For information on
starting dates and times, contact either Tim Steinert (675-9167) or
Jonathon Isselman (675-6021).
Summer 3D archery will begin on Thursday nights
starting on May 8th through August 28th. This league
is always filled with returning shooters. However, the club does hold
four, open to the public, 3D archery shoots during the summer. These will
be on May 18th, June 22nd, July 27th, and
August 24th. These events are great ways to tune up your
shooting skills for the fall hunt. Twenty-eight 3D animal targets are set
in lifelike settings with unmarked distances. The May shoot will also
incorporate a sportsman’s rummage sale.
Club President, Joe Fuehrer, has been appointed as a
Washington County delegate to the Wisconsin Conservation Congress.
Spring on the Welcome, H.O.M.E. Prairie
By Diane Miller
It’s St. Patrick’s Day and I just saw the first blue
birds of the season sitting on the roof. Next they’ll check out all the
bird houses to see if one is to their liking. They should be building
their nests in a couple weeks. We’re usually fortunate enough to have at
least one family nest along our prairie line. Also saw a flock of robins
and some red winged black birds in the prairie. On my stroll down the
trail in the woods today a woodcock was hiding in the brush. I¹ve heard
them, but never had the pleasure of seeing one before. Their camouflage
is perfect in the fallen brown leaves. I bet I’ve passed a number of them
without even knowing they were there - which, of course, is their plan!
So what’s coming up at Welcome, HOME with the arrival of spring, after a
nicely mild winter? We have some interesting guest reservations. We make
our lower level - far more than just a basement - available to groups
for meetings, in service and training days, retreats. Call Diane if you’d
like more information or to stop up and see what we have.
At the end March the staff from the 16th Street Community Health Clinic
are coming for a retreat day. They plan to take advantage of our rural
location - a real treat for the majority of these folks who live and work
on the south side of Milwaukee - while they participate in a day of in
service and rejuvenating.
During the first week of April New Horizons Un-Limited - a nonprofit
organization that assists people living with disabilities learn about
computers - is hosting a 2 day workshop at Welcome, H.O.M.E. Most of the
registered attendees (20) are from the Waukesha area.
As soon as the seedlings we ordered from the Washington County tree
program arrive Rick Gramall, Charlie Wilfer and Nick Mathieu (thanks for
the daffodils fellas’) are going to plant them. We added about 60 small
trees to our grounds every spring in the hope of perpetuating the rural
nature of our surroundings and maintaining a consistent rejuvenation of
the woodland. We plant native trees since they require the least amount
of attention to thrive and will attract regional wildlife and birds.
If you, your entire family, scouts, pioneers, youth
group, company, church, civic organization are looking for a volunteer
project. we usually have a "to do" list. Bob Schwinn, Leo Miller, Orv
and Guenther are typically working on some project Wednesday mornings from
8:00 - 11:30. Stop up to offer a hand, have some coffee and just see
what’s new.
Later in April when the early woodland flowers - hepatica, bloodroot,
skunk cabbage - begin to appear, Welcome, H.O.M.E. once again will
gladly share our place with you for the annual Newburg Lioness Club Easter
Egg Hunt. In order to ensure the fun and safety of all who attend -
especially the kids - we ask that you LEAVE YOUR DOGS AT HOME,
please!
During the month of May Lifetime members of the Telephone Pioneers will be
hosting an all day meeting here. The Coalition of Service Providers from
Washington County will be touring to get a better idea of how we can be of
service to their clientele. And, perhaps one of the prettiest days of the
year, the Newburg Lioness geranium delivery. Although the geraniums are
pre-sold by the Lioness’, the entire order is delivered to them at
Welcome, H.O.M.E. Here the Lioness’ have plenty of space to sort the
plants by the orders they have previously taken. Hundreds of blooming
geraniums all in one place creates a breathtaking sight.
In June the SOS mothers (a support group for families who have a child
with a developmental disability) will enjoy a day of BBQ and visiting.
On June 25 Welcome, H.O.M.E. will host a Chamber Exchange. This is a
monthly West Bend Area Chamber of Commerce event. Members (and potential
members) of the chamber are invited to attend for a $3 (at the door)
admission fee. Refreshments are provided by the host. We will be
featuring our breakfast pizza, home made breads, s¹mores and Bloody
Mary’s. This is a good opportunity to showcase our program and our
community.
Mark your calendars - on Sunday , September 14, Welcome, H.O.M.E. will be
having an event that is still in the planning stages. We hope to offer
breakfast, quilts on display, tours of the house, family activities and
just an overall fun day. We¹ll let you know more as we get the plans
firmed up. Any quilters who would like to show off your work for a day,
give us a call. Diane at 675-2525 or Jane Derks at 692-2554.
Some people are planning ahead - making arrangements for their summer
vacations or family events. The Bed and Breakfast is already reserved for
several nights in May by families from Colorado and Chicago. During the
Harley Celebration in August Welcome, H.O.M.E. will have some physicians
and their wives from Phoenix, Arizona here for a couple of nights, then
air traffic controllers from Olathe, Kansas the remaining 4 nights. All
of them are excited about being out in the country.
Remember, although designed to be VERY wheelchair friendly, the Welcome,
H.O.M.E. Bed and Breakfast is open to the public. We charge just $50 per
night per room and, we still have lots of nights available. If you have
guests coming in from out of town, or business associates needing a place
to stay, give us a call. If you’d like to see what our accommodations
are, stop up or call to arrange for a quick tour.
If you’re curious about how to make a home, apartment user friendly to
someone living with physical limitations or compromises - anyone have a
parent who is aging? - call about touring Welcome, H.O.M.E. That’s what
we¹re here for. Tours are free of charge and the house is filled with
ideas ranging from simple to more complex.
While the Welcome, H.O.M.E. woods is not public land,
we are VERY willing to share. As the weather warms we invite you to feel
free to enjoy our wheelchair friendly grounds. However, we do ask you to
help us by :
1.) not
riding bikes on the trail
leaving your dogs at home when you come to take a
walk or attend an event
please take all of your litter home with you.
The trails in the woods, picnic tables, Porta-Potty are
all paid for and maintained by Welcome, H.O.M.E. Inc. - a nonprofit
organization that is operated by volunteers, supported by private
donations. We have no official affiliation with Riveredge Nature Center,
although we are good friends and neighbors.
Hope this answers some of the questions you may have. If not, don’t
hesitate to ask.
Wishing all our neighbors a safe and sunny spring.

Dept. of Public Works
By Trustee Bill Sackett
Spring is coming and everyone is getting ready to plant
shrubs, trees, etc. Please remember, no obstructions are permitted in the
"right of way" of the village streets. If you have any questions regarding
the right of ways in the village, please contact the village office at
675-2160.
We have purchased new flags to replace some of the
older and damaged ones.
We will be doing crack filling and line striping on the
village streets this spring. Crack filling to help preserve the road
infrastructure of the village and re-stripe parking areas, etc. for safety
purposes. This will be done before our Newburg Fireman’s picnic in June.
Newburg Police Dept.
By Chief Michael Maeder
Spring is nearing and more children are out riding bikes during hours
of darkness. Parents are responsible for children’s safety. Parents can be
issued a citation for allowing their children to ride a bike at night
without proper lighting on their bikes.
During hours of darkness, a white light must shine forward and be able
to be seen at a distance of 50 to 500 feet. A red reflector must be on the
rear of the bike, at least 2 inches long. A red flashing light can be
used, but still must have the reflector. This is what the state law
requires. Let’s have a safe summer.
Although not a state law, bike helmets should be worn. This is
protection for everyone.

Newburg Baseball
By Phyllis Damrow
If you missed the sign up, there is still room for you
to join. We have many new children and families that are joining us this
year and we are very happy to have them!
Our season will start in June. Please come to the
Firemen’s Park any Wednesday, Thursday or Friday from 6-10 p.m. for some
good fun, food and entertainment. We can always use people to volunteer
for umpiring a game or 2 or even help in our concession stand.
Along with the sign up, the children were asked to
either sell candy or pizza’s. When these youngsters come to your door,
please be generous. This is the only fundraiser to help offset expenses.
Schedules for the upcoming season will be available in
late May. Please call Phyllis Damrow at 675-2493 for a copy of the
schedule or if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you at a
game or two. |
